About Us

Capital BMX is a community sports club, dedicated to growing the sport of BMX Racing in Wellington city, and the wider Wellington region. We are registered as an incorporated society and also as a registered charity. We maintain the BMX track in Ian Galloway Park for club events and it is open to the public for free when we aren’t using it. We are a member of the Wellington Regional BMX Association, along with the clubs in Upper Hutt (Hutt Valley Thunderbolts) and Paraparaumu Beach (Kapiti BMX), and we are affiliated to our National Sporting Organisation – BMX New Zealand.

How we’re run

The club is run by a committee of volunteers, supported by many helpers outside the committee. Committee business covers preparation for events, track maintenance & development, dealing with any correspondence and/or health & safety reports and making sure we continue to be in a strong financial position. The committee meets online on the first Tuesday of each month, except January.

Membership Communications

We keep members and supporters up to date through a few channels:

  • This website: general information about the club, how it’s run and what to expect. It’s aimed mainly at new riders and families.
  • News: announcements and event write-ups, also shared on our Facebook page.
  • Members & Supporters Facebook group: a private group for discussion.
  • WhatsApp group: for quick announcements and informal chat, e.g. “I’m running the gate at 4pm, anyone want to join me?”
  • Email: regular updates on upcoming events and club news.

Our Site

We hold a licence to operate (lease) from Wellington City Council for 8,000m² at the southern end of Ian Galloway Park. We’re responsible for maintaining the site, and we work with the Council for landowner permission for further development (e.g. track lighting, a gate canopy). We pay a peppercorn rent in exchange for keeping the track open to the public.

We run working bees a few times a year for tidy-ups, maintenance and minor development work. Typically these are end of season (April/May), pre-season (August), and pre-NQM (November/January). Every couple of years we bring in lime from Havelock North to maintain the track surface, which is another all-hands-on-deck job for watering and rolling. And of course there’s grass cutting and weed whacking – almost every time we’re at the track, to keep things under control.

Capital BMX and the Wellington Region

Capital BMX operates as part of the Wellington Region, under the auspices of the Wellington Regional BMX Association, alongside Hutt Valley Thunderbolts BMX and Kāpiti BMX Club. The Association coordinates across the three clubs, acting as the bridge to BMX NZ. It’s the region that sets the dates for our NQMs, and the hosting club for the Wellington Regional Championships. The region also co-ordinates the Wellington Winter Series, where the clubs compete for the Handlebar trophy. Capital BMX is represented by two delegates on the regional committee.

Each of the tracks have their own unique character, and it’s well worth visiting them to ride the different features. Our riders often compete in their club days and vice versa, and all the clubs in our region run the same ability based class names.

Kapiti BMX club is at 32 Percival Rd, Paraparaumu Beach. Check out their website or Facebook page for what they’re up to.

Hutt Valley Thunderbolts BMX club is based in McLeod Park at 54 McLeod St, Upper Hutt. HVT website and Facebook page.
