Each year Wellington region put on a winter series set of interclub BMX races, one at each track, where individuals are gathering points for themselves and the clubs are competing for the Handlebar trophy.

Race format

The race format is the same as club day racing in our ability based groups, with moto’s one to four scoring points.  8 points are awarded for first place, 7 for second, etc.  and the points are added up across the three meets.

For the interclub element, 8 randomly selected riders represent their club and their results added together to get a total for the club.  Slightly confusingly, we take the info off Sqorz on the day, where it’s 1 for a first, 2 for second, etc. so the club with the lowest total takes the trophy home.

3 rounds – 1 per club

This year we had Capital BMX hosting Round 1 in May; HVT will host the second round under lights in June, then a break with 10 riders from across the region away at the World Championships in July, and back for the final round at Kapiti in August.

We had 34 entries for the Capital meet with 14 each from Capital and HVT and 6 from Kapiti.  Whilst it was largely the regular travelers from Kapiti, it was great to see a few new faces from HVT venturing away from the comfort of their home track to try a new place.

Results

Beetles had 4 riders, with everyone going off the gate.  As some of the HVT riders gained confidence on the bug track, the results got closer, with Carson (HVT) and Korda (HVT) chasing down Bentley (HVT) who took out the wins in each moto.

Mustangs had seven on the gate; with Aella (CAP) getting out fast each time, only to be overhauled by Percy (CAP) for the hole-shot, which he held each moto.  It was Harpy’s (KAP) first visit to Capital and she had a great battle with Aella all day – only a few tenths separating them and she picked up a 2nd place behind Percy in moto 5.

Vipers also had seven on the gate, with all the rounds following the same pattern with Dylan Leigh (KAP) taking the win, followed by Maddx (HVT) and Odin (CAP).

A few new faces to Fast ‘n Furious with Spencer and Liam stepping up a level.  Tom (KAP) and Jamie (CAP) set the pace by some margin, chased for 3rd by another Worlds rider, Glen Richardson (HVT).

4 riders in Thunderbirds traded places several times, with Trevor (CAP), Matt (CAP) and Luke (CAP) all getting a moto win; and Trevor the most consistent taking out the class.

And finally, four riders in out Colts class with Olivia (KAP) getting the hill, but Sam (HVT) winning each moto and Arla (HVT) in third.

At the end of the day, Kapiti’s travelling crew were too strong for the randomly selected riders from the other clubs, and they took home the bragging rights and Handlebar trophy.

They’ll defend it on Saturday evening, June 13th, at HVT under lights.
